Huey Lewis of clients Huey Lewis & The News: Back in the 80s, our manager, Bob Brown, was a relentless advocate for us, both in public and within the music business. We outworked the other bands on our label. Thus, we became a priority for our label. And they in turn promoted us even more.
Back then, there was only one avenue to success. There was no internet, no jam band scene, no "American Idol." It was all about attracting a record label to sign you to a contract. Then it was about outworking the other bands on that label, or having the right timing so the label didn't have anything else to promote at the moment, and thus your record became a priority for them. You weren't directly competing with the other artists, but you wanted to be the label's priority. You wanted them to think that you were their best chance of success.
