Third Eye Blind, Umphrey's McGee, The Devlins
Cris Cohen: Did you ever have actual guitar lessons or was it all...
Kryz Reid of Third Eye Blind: No. All self-taught. No, it was just watching Jimi Hendrix on (video tape), rewinding the f---ing thing, and going, "How is he doing it?" That kind of stuff. But the thing is, when I started learning to play the guitar, I had already had a few girlfriends. I had been deeply in love. I had my heart completely smashed and all of that. And I'm an arty little f---er. I was always drawing and sketching and stuff like that as a kid. So, for me, (music was) the perfect conduit for all of that.
(From my interview with Umphrey's McGee about their cover of David Bowie's "Let's Dance" with Huey Lewis / Huey Lewis & The News)
Ryan Stasik: I do have a funny quote from Huey. We were talking about fade outs versus endings for songs. A lot of songs have fade outs. Huey told us, “Fade outs are just the result of you being too lazy to come up with a good ending.”
So when we had the option to fade out at the end of “Let’s Dance,” we were like, “Are we lazy?”
That's why we don't fade the song out.
Colin Devlin of clients The Devlins: I think some of my best songs have an element of melancholy in them, I’m not the happy songwriter guy. I’m just more drawn to the atmospheric side of music in terms of mood and emotion.
